Braces Vs. Invisalign: Why is Invisalign Right for Me?
Faris Kirmani • June 12, 2019
It’s nearly invisible, it straightens teeth, and you can eat or drink as you normally do without fear of damaging the trays. Invisalign seems like a miracle product; so, what’s the catch?
Well, there is none; Invisalign has become a leading choice for straightening teeth and correcting a crooked smile, and many patients have incredible success with Invisalign.
However, how do you know whether Invisalign is right for you, and what’s the difference between Invisalign and the more traditional option, braces?
It’s in the name. Invisible plus alignment equals Invisalign. It can be embarrassing for adults to show up in a meeting with the dreaded “brace face.” However, most people won’t even notice you’re wearing your Invisalign trays, as they’re a clear, thin customized retainer that fits snug over your teeth. Even you will forget they’re there.
They’re removable. Invisalign retainers can be removed, and should be removed in certain circumstances. Still, you should wear your Invisalign retainers for at least 22 hours every day to ensure the best outcome.
No dieting here!
One of the circumstances in which you should remove your Invisalign: eating. That means you can eat and drink whatever you want as long as your Invisalign retainers come out first. Remember to take them out for your morning coffee or tea as well, as the Invisalign can stain. You certainly don’t want to spend 22 hours a day with a permanently stained retainer.
Going wireless. Invisalign requires no brackets or wires, which means you don’t have to deal with the discomfort associated with poking wires or attempting to brush and clean around brackets.
When Braces Are Better
During childhood. Invisalign is not a good choice for children or young adults
whose jaws are still growing. The kids will still have to show up to school with braces for the time being.
Can be faster. Though this isn’t always the case, braces can be a quicker solution to realigning a crooked smile than Invisalign. However, Invisalign technology continues to improve, and some patients’ smiles are fixed quicker with Invisalign.
They work for every smile. For crooked smiles that require a lot of shifting, braces are still king. However, this is changing every day as Invisalign technology improves.
