CROWN AND BRIDGE

Dental Crowns

If you have a tooth that’s badly damaged, you might think it needs to be pulled. Not so fast–dental crowns can save teeth that might look hopeless! Chipped, cracked, decayed, and even infected teeth can be restored. They will look attractive, function like normal, and can last for decades. But if you have lost a tooth, crowns can support a bridge to replace it.

Dental crowns can be a remarkable value for your dental care, preserving your natural tooth instead of replacing it. To learn whether a crown can save your tooth, please call (02) 4501 7930 or book an appointment today with a Hawkesbury dentist at Riverlands Dental Care in North Richmond.

What a Dental Crown Can Do

Dental crowns are versatile restorations. With a dental crown, we can:
  • Repair a tooth too decayed for fillings
  • Restore strength to a damaged tooth
  • Protect a tooth after root canal therapy
  • Provide a new cosmetic exterior for a tooth
  • Build up a small or worn tooth
  • Reshape a tooth with unattractive form
  • Close a gap in a smile
  • Top a dental implant or support a dental bridge
When teeth are badly decayed, fillings can’t repair them. The tooth is too weak, and it needs the strength of a dental crown. Dental crowns can also seal off after root canal therapy. Removing the infection can leave the tooth weaker, and it needs the dental crown to support and protect it.

Dental crowns are also great for cosmetic dentistry. They provide the tooth with an entirely new surface, covering discolouration as well as damage. Crowns can build up small teeth or reshape a tooth with unattractive form, like a peg lateral. They can also reshape your teeth to close a gap in your smile. Basically, they can do the same cosmetic work as veneers, but we use them when stresses might be too much for veneers. And while dental crowns usually help save a tooth, they can also help replace a tooth, either topping a dental implant or supporting a dental bridge.
  • Does Private Dental Insurance Cover the Cost of Crowns?

Sometimes, When crowns are used to restore a damaged tooth, they will be covered (at least partially). When used for cosmetic purposes , they won’t be.

  • How Long Do Dental Crowns Last?

Dental crowns are durable restorations. If you take proper care of your crowns, they can last for 10-20 years.

The Dental Crown Procedure

It usually takes two visits to place a dental crown. During the first visit, we will prepare your tooth to receive the crown. We will remove any decayed or damaged tooth structure. We’ll also perform any necessary procedures like root canal therapy. We may also need to remove tooth structure just to make room for the crown.

Then we will take impressions and fit you with a temporary crown. We send the impressions to a dental lab, who will make your crown.

When the crown is ready, we will recall you to fit it. We will check the fit and appearance of the crown. If it is right, we will permanently cement it to your tooth.

Dental Bridges

Dental bridges are a tooth replacement option that is diminishing in popularity since the invention of dental implants. A dental bridge is a replacement tooth that is supported by one or two dental crowns.

However, dental bridges are not always the best choice. Compared to dental implants, bridges:
  • Doesn’t require surgery
  • Doesn’t depend on bone mass
  • Can be placed quickly
  • Can restore teeth near a gap at the same time
  • Fixed in the mouth — not removable
  • Full function — bite and chew normally
However, dental bridges are not always the best choice. Compared to dental implants, bridges:
  • Can increase risk to supporting teeth
  • Are usable in limited situations
  • Don’t support jawbone and gums
  •  Are not as long-lasting
This is why implants continue to grow in popularity, while bridges decline overall. But in some situations, a bridge remains the best solution.
