If you’ve checked out the price of
dental implant restorations
in Australia as opposed to the dental implant cost in Thailand, then chances are you’ve been left gobsmacked.
Getting dental implants in Thailand certainly seems a good alternative to getting treatment at home. With prices up to 60% cheaper in some cases, it’s hardly surprising that 10,000 or more Australians travel to far-flung destinations each year to save money.
Throw in some sunshine, sightseeing, and exotic food, and it seems like an ideal opportunity to combine a holiday in Thailand with dental treatment. Or does it?
How Much Does A Dental Implant Cost In Thailand?
Sounds good so far, agreed.
But in truth, going abroad is a risk strategy that could end up costing you more in the long run. Here are some other factors that you need to consider before booking your flight.
Low Dental Implant Cost In Thailand Could Mean Low Quality Implant
- Have very little chair side experience
- May not be trained in the latest techniques and technologies
- Are not using reputable,
proven dental implant brands
Here in Australia, the level of training and the quality of treatment and standards is far stricter than many other countries. Ultimately, the risk of complications or infections may be greater if you choose the wrong dentist in Thailand. So why not booking a consultation at your local dental clinic and have a piece of mind?
Timescale Could Be A Problem
Dental implants in many cases involve 3 separate stages from start to finish. They include:
1. Placing the implant
2. Securing the abutment and,
3. Adding the dental crown
Often several weeks/months are needed in between each stage to allow for the bone to fuse around the implant and for subsequent healing.
While this isn’t a problem when you get dental implants in Australia, it can be more of a problem when you’re swayed by the dental implant cost in Thailand.
Most people who travel abroad for dental implant treatment only book a 2-week break since this is all the time they can take away from work for a vacation. This means the Thai dentist may have to rush through all of the stages of the implant procedure without allowing sufficient time for your mouth to heal. This in itself can be a recipe for disaster.
The alternative, of course, is to place the implant during one visit to Thailand, but then, you will need to return in a few months’ time to have the abutment and the crown fitted. That means arranging more time off work and paying for another flight to and from Thailand. Suddenly, the savings you were looking to make are dwindling. Book an appointment with a dentist that offers consultation locally and discuss the procedure and costs to get answers to all your questions.

Limited Recourse
We’ve already mentioned the risk of complications, but what does happen if something goes wrong? Even in the hands of an experienced dentist at home, it’s estimated that between 5 and 10% of dental implants fail and often this can be anything from one month or several years following the procedure.
In the unfortunate event that this happens to you, it may mean taking more time off work, flying back to your overseas surgeon in Thailand, and trying to get the problem resolved. Clearly, this isn’t an ideal situation. If even at all possible.
The other option is for a revision in Australia which is likely to cost the same amount (or more) than it would, had you got an implant here in Australia in the first place.
On the contrary, when you
receive a dental implant from a local dentist, you’ll be expected to keep regular appointments to enable the dentist to monitor your progress and ensure that your treatment is going to plan. Should any problems arise, they can be dealt with quickly, saving you time and money.
No Travel Insurance
Were you aware that most travel insurers do not cover elective dental treatment overseas?
This means that should any complications occur during implant treatment that involve you being hospitalised, then it will be down to you or members of your family to foot the medical bills. Ouch!
This fact alone should make you think twice before being lured away from home by the dental implant cost in Thailand.
So, let us ask you this. Do you think the savings on dental implants are worth risking your oral and medical health?
If it’s just the cost that’s putting you off having treatment at home, then why not shop around to compare prices in Australia, ask your dentist if they’re offering any special promotions, and inquire about any dental payment plans or finance options they may be providing. You could find that dental implants are just as affordable here as they are in Thailand.
